Specializing in couples counseling and individual counseling/therapy around anxiety, grief, life transitions, and career.

Hi, I'm Lori Nicolaysen, LCMHCA
I want to help you successfully navigate your journey and meet your goals, whether you are revitalizing your relationship, managing anxiety or depression, dealing with loss, or building a new career. I provide therapy and counseling for individuals and couples in North Carolina. I offer sessions virtually and in-person (1316 Broad Street in Durham).

I have fourteen years' experience in the field of mental health counseling and recently decided to pursue licensure. I provide a warm, kind, grounded space in which you can gain mental clarity and access to internal and external resources. My style is active and collaborative, and I rely on evidence-based methods. You can learn more about my background here.

Session Length & Fees
Individual counseling therapy appointments are 50 minutes in length and occur as often as necessary. Couples counseling appointments are typically 90 minutes.
Free consultation appointments are 30 minutes. Session fees will be established during your initial conversation and are based on type of service provided and session length. While I do assist with out-of-network insurance reimbursement for individual therapy, I do not contract with any insurance companies directly. Couples counseling focuses on the relationship and is therefore not reimbursable by insurance.
Experience
For more than two decades I have been supporting individuals undergoing career and life transitions. My work has included roles in career counseling, student affairs, and admissions at Duke University, Weill Cornell Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine, UC Davis’s School of Nursing, and the University of Virginia. Alongside these academic pursuits, I've practiced and led groups in meditation, mindfulness, breathwork, and dreamwork for over twenty years.

It is these diverse experiences that enable me to provide compassionate, holistic, evidence-based counseling tailored to each person’s unique journey. I am committed to helping individuals navigate complex life challenges and find clarity, strength, and direction along the way.
